Boost for Business with 'Le Tour de Yorkshire'

The Tour de Yorkshire this year will be seeing Sir Bradley Wiggins and Marcel Kittel amongst many other taking part. It is expected that the 3 day event will see a much needed boost for business in Yorkshire.

Le Tour de Yorkshire

Lyndon Campbell, our Partner specialising in Commercial Law, also hopes that the event will be good for the economy:

"Events such as this are great for a boost in the economy and local business. People will come from afar to see the famous cyclists compete, making use of local amenities. We also expect to see an increase in business at other times of the year, as cyclists will be eager to try the three different stages themselves."

Copyright and Intelectual Property

Amid the excitement, businesses must keep in mind the potential for copyright breaches.

Lyndon, who is based at our Leeds office, advises:

"Although this is an exciting time for local businesses, and you want to do all you can to promote your services, it is imperative to remember copyright restrictions."

"Businesses must be careful using unauthorised photos of the famous cyclists taking part, and also using the Tour de Yorkshire logo. These are just a couple of examples of potential copyright infringements."

A Much Needed Uplift for Business

Along with the Tour de Yorkshire, a boost for the local economy in Leeds is also anticipated with the construction of a new retail park. Opus North have been given authorisation to build an £8.5 million retail park in Armley, Leeds. It is expected that the new shopping centre will bring more jobs and more people to the area.

The expected uplift for businesses appears to be much needed, as property agents JLL have spoken out about the lack of industrial and warehouse space in Yorkshire and how this harms the local economy.

Despite speculative development plans to expand industrial and warehouse space by over 600,000 sq ft, JLL anticipate that the supply will continue to fall. This, in turn, is driving an increase in rental prices due to increased demand.

We at SM Commerical are hoping that these plans, coupled with the Tour de Yorkshire, will have a much needed positive impact on the local economy.
